Story of Maa Katyayani

Daksha Prajapati had a big holy event at his home. However, he did not invite Sati and her husband, Lord Shiva. When Sati heard about it, she went there anyway. Furthermore, Her father ignored her and insulted her. This made Goddess Sati very angry, and she jumped into the holy fire.

This made Lord Shiva furious. When he found out that his dear wife had died, he created Virbharda who then killed Daksha. Furthermore, In state of sadness Shiva started to roam around with dead body of Sati in his hand. Shri Visnu the cut Sati’s body in 52 pieces to bring Shiva back to his consciousness. Goddess Sati’s hair fell in Vrindavan to this place and subsequently this place then became known as the Katyayni Peeth.

Significance

Many devotees who deeply love Goddess Durga and her nine forms visit Katyayni Peeth in Vrindavan. Goddess Durga is very powerful, and Maa Katyayni is her sixth form. Also, the Katyayni temple is connected to Krishna’s stories. Since it is in Vrindavan, Krishna’s magic is everywhere. According to the Sri Mad Bhagwat Mahapuran, the Gopis of Vrindavan prayed to Maa Katyayani to get Lord Krishna as their husband. It was Maa’s blessings that Krishna did Maharas with Gopis to fulfil their this desire. Even now, unmarried girls in Vrindavan go to this temple. They pray for a good husband and a happy married life. Lord krishna also worshipped Maa Katyayani and seek her blessings before killing Kansa.
